I'll Wait sounds very good, especially now that Ed is playing guitar to enhance the sound of the keyboards, makes it sound less pop and more rock. Dave is really sounding much better than he did last year. Hell,I would have never expected him to hold the "AS FINE AS YOU AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRREEEEEEEE" note for as long as he did, compared to how he sounded last year. How do you spell pretentious? I seriously doubt Van Halen would be capable of doing more than, say, four months on the road as representing a leg of a tour, and that would require a couple of months off after that was completed. Maybe three or (at most) four shows a week during that four month cycle.
They're just too old to go at it full-bore: when Roth was proposing in the beginning of 2012 that the band was gonna undertake a ferociously ambitious full-year + schedule, it sounded like a pipe dream when he said it and this proved to be correct.
Keep in mind, Eddie Van Halen isn't even supposed to be alive right now. He almost drank himself to death in 2004, not to mention why the 2nd leg of ADKOT tour was cancelled in the first place, the diverticulitis. If Ed had not been sober, the diverticulitis would have killed him. Period, the end. He's a very lucky man that he was able to quit drinking and become healthy again. How do you spell pretentious? But ... but, this is interesting. Ed has always been a bit disingenious about his influences. He always says, 'Clapton was my biggest influence, but I sound nothing like him' etc. As a soloist maybe ... Or, 'I don't listen to anybody' (bullshit before he was famous for sure). I have heard surf guitar in Ed's long lead lines (rather than his solos), especially ones that are not obviously hard rock variations on blues kind of things. 'Loss of Control', the guitar-only track on youtube highlights it for me. Dick Dale on speed. Other tunes that were probably complete instrumentally before they became songs with vocals, etc - 'Sinner's Swing'. 'Top Jimmy'.
But - Little Feat. There was the Warners connection, Chef, as you know; Ted and Donn Landee produced a few of their early albums. And more - at the time VH were signed to Warners the Little Feat backing singer, Nicolette Larson (Val's maid of honor at her wedding to Ed, no less) was Ted's girlfriend. Ed appeared on her album in '78, I think. She fleetingly appeared on WACF - she probably hung out at the sessions with Ted. Around the same time VH take her tune 'Lotta Love' and slap Dave and Mike on it singing 'It's Gonna Take a Lot of Drugs'...
The point being, yeah - I think Ed had heard Little Feat!! So, you could be bang on the money there.THINK LIKE THE WAVESComment
