I'm still watching it on my other machine as I type now and this show is out fucking standing! Dave's still got great performances left in him and this proves it! CT and DTNA are what they are but whatever! Dave sounds strong. He really tried hard to stay down low and not get outside of his real sound. Much better on this vid than most performances during last summer!

Fantastic show. That little bit of reverb on Dave's voice does the trick. He stretches his vocal bluesyness a bit further with a touch of jape on the mic.
He clearly dodged the headless body in a topless bar line. Seemed more intentional than a "forgot the f'n words" moment. Wonder why the switch up. He sang it a little better than usual.
That version of Mean Street gave me the fucking chills at the break down.
I usually skip past YRGM. Glad I didn't! Nice three twins jam session at the request of Dave!

I think it's tough for these ageing frontmen to bring the vocals they once had, compared to the guitar player, drummer and bassist.
When Black Sabbbath played Adelaide in May, Ozzy was given a poor review regarding his vocals by our daily paper, The Advertiser (May 8, 2013). The journalist wrote, "His vocals were quite often all over the place", "the frontman's pitch jumped around as quick as Butler's fretwork, and "it was very easy to hear the bum notes." The point was also made that no-one cared as it was Sabbath with their iconic frontman.
I've also seen Mick Jagger and Paul Stanley heavily criticised for their vocals in recent times.
I think Dave's vocals in these Japanese shows are fine, particulary Tokyo. Not what they were in 2007/08 or during his heyday, but considering his age he's doing a good job. And keep in mind that youtube doesn't tell the real story. In Sydney, Dave sounded really good from 5m away and after the show everyone I was with was talking about what a great performance it was from the whole band, including Dave. Then I saw some youtube footage and it doesn't do it justice.
Even if Dave's vocals are not what some of us want them to be...the positives of having him back far out-weigh the negatives.Last edited by Halen High; 06-24-2013, 02:24 AM.Comment

I feel I've been a bit critical / whiney of Dave lately .
But that show certainly has Dave back to a better level of vocal performance , less reaching for the difficult ranges .
Maybe they are on a roll , and it will improve gig on gig with all the gigs coming ....... Oh
Whine whine :Dfuck your fucking framingComment

It's a pretty good show.
But I gotta say it has highlighted again for me one thing I have not really liked since the 2007 tour - and this is maybe a charge that can be levelled at most contemporary tours: Why is it so bright on stage for most of the set (the occasional intro aside)? It's like a TV studio.
A bit of atmosphere would be nice - I always liked gigs where the lighting was used to create and shift mood, create more of a sense of dynamics etc. It maybe works better if you are, e.g., Zeppelin - cos the music is all light and shade and contrasts etc (although I think their O2 show was all lights blaring as well the whole time) - but still ... it just feels a bit flat and one-dimensional when it seems like everything is always totally visible ...THINK LIKE THE WAVESComment

Is it for the sake of the video screens?
They seem to be getting really sophisticated. In the olden times if there was one at all it seemed there was only one or two cameras that would maybe show the guitarist during a solo and then go back to the singer.
Nowadays it's like a live DVD after post production. At the Rush gig I was at last month they were picking out individual fills a bar long and either the director knew the music as well as the most hardcore fan or they had a hugely detailed script.Comment

Yeah - I think you are spot on, Sesh. That must be why it is now the norm on big arena shows / stadium shows.
You know, I was watching a DVD of Springsteen from 78. Onstage, it's often mostly dark, and there seems to be two or maybe three cameras, and they are 90% on him, but the show (which is part of his Darkness on the Edge of town reissue) had a real sense of tension and drama and excitement. It was an amazing erformance.
Those over-illuminated shows might help project good visuals to the back of an arena, but they are not exciting. they are boring.THINK LIKE THE WAVESComment

I'm watching the show... What a blast! The four of them are enjoying playing, it's obvious - especially Ed and Al, visually.
Dave's voice sounds much, much better than last year.
I'll just whine a little here... To the folks up there in VH: don't forget that old continent across the Atlantic anymore... please....posted by Ellyllions Men say, "I'll never understand women." Gonna say it again, it's an overseas show....
I can't say for certain, but every show I've seen overseas (I think 5 or 6) has their local crew operate a portion of the stage show, resulting in it looking much different-looking onstage as compared to their "normal" show in the States....Eat Us And Smile - The Originals
