All-Encompassing Van Halen New Album / Interscope Thread
Is this about vh? This is from today's Grammy press release:
"In addition to unveiling nominations for the 54th GRAMMY Awards, "The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live!" will feature a special, live announcement from a truly iconic group regarding their historic band reunion set to take place on the GRAMMY stage on Feb. 12, 2012. "

The word "reunion" got me guessing. Either it's not vh or that the 20-something PR writer doesn't have a clue about vh.
Rumor has it to be N Sync, Blink 182 or Creed, who apparently didn't learn anything the last time they got back together and tripped all over their cranks.

Would you call any one of those three a "truly iconic group"?

Reason: I said...none of your fucking business!

Nope, but I didn't get paid to write the announcement. Then again, I was one of the few people that thought the Grammys got things right when they gave that award to Jethro Tull instead of Metallica.
"here’s why we think it’s Van Halen: the band — i.e. the David Lee Roth-fronted version — has recorded new material with John Shanks, although when we asked the producer about it a few months ago, he buttoned up tight, but he smiled big. Plus, other outlets, like The Hollywood Reporter, assert that the group has already inked with Columbia Records for the new set, although the label isn’t talking. So... if there’s a finished album, or nearly finished album, in the can, the Grammys would be the perfect place to debut the first single"
Of course we all take on board that the internet IS a rumour machine, etc., but one comment under the story claiming inside info says it is VH and the 'new single sounds like early 80s VH'.
Could be a total ball of bullshit, but - hey- we wouldn't be here if it was all cut and dried and fkin obvious.

Reason: Add-ins
The problem is, when you really study what is being said, the article holds water like a cheese grater. According to the piece, on November 30th, a group will make a live announcement about performing on February 12th. Now, when was the last time the VH brain trust announced anything like that in advance without kicking and screaming (they didn't even put up any reference on their own web site about the ill-fated Soundwave thing until they were goaded into it by the promoter), let alone displayed any sort of ability to think roughly 3 months into the future?
Van Halen has been "rumored" to play the Grammys pretty much every year since 1999 - even when they weren't actually working together at all (2002-2006).
The fact that they do have a new album in the can, and the likely release date would be right around the time of the Grammys does lead a little bit of credibility to this round of rumors, I guess.
Though the reunion isn't exactly a "shock" now, since they have been officially reunited (or reconfigured, for the Mikey purists) since 2007. By the same token, a Black Sabbath reunion really wouldn't shock many people, since that already happened in 1985 at Live Aid, then again in 1992, and finally that 7 year period from 1997 to 2004 when they were touring every year, but sadly failed to produce an album.
Hope it's NOT some fucking 40 year old "boy band" like N'Suck or New Kids Who Think They Can Act Now or whatever.
"If the American people had ever known the truth about what we (the BCE) have done to this nation, we would be chased down in the streets and lynched." - Poppy Bush, 1992
Leaving aside the regularity of such 'reunions' being announced ever time the Grammys comes around, one thing that does seem increasinly indisputable is that the Van Halens have no interest in the internet, or the expectations of fans conditioned by the norms of the information age. They believe in information scarcity - less is more. And, they might have a point. If we were able to follow their every step, see into their lives, etc., we might get bored pretty quickly. You kinda always want what you can't get (because you can't always get what you want, as Mick sang ...)!
They've been playing hard to get for too long in a way that is totally at odds with being 'out there' in the way that bands and performers are these days.
So, I'm thinking that maybe going the rather older-fashioned route of unveiling it all via something like the Grammys - on TV rather than via some website announcement - might be more in keeping with their outlook ...

Both these statements ... the timing and vh doing things the old fashioned way lead me to think maybe, just maybe, this could be it or maybe it's Bananarama.
Another one of those classic genius posts, sure to generate responses. You log on the next day to see what your witty gem has produced to find no one gets it and 2 knotheads want to stick their dicks in it... Well played, sir!!
