The problem with the OWS movement is they don't have a unified message.
Every group has its fringe; They are the fringe and don't represent the main thrust.

I don't agree that a lack of a unified message is a problem.

My brother in law is an airline pilot and was laid over in New York City. He was curious and went down to the financial district to check out the OWS protests. He says it's been reduced to a tiny area. He said right now what's left in New York is a pretty small group on a small chicklet of land. He said they are dedicated to their cause though and aren't going to give up. He just didn't really know what to think of it. He said the people were pretty weird but made the comment even wierdos have the constitutional right to protest and corporate America has done a fine job of fucking over those who work in the airline industry. He makes half of what he used to make and this is a guy who has been flying commercial since 1983 and flew charter before that.

Yup. Why do you think sales reps and Mormon missionaries are clean cut and wear dark conservative suits? It's respectable to everyone. When you act and look like a bunch of slobs nobody takes you seriously. When I worked at Hewlett-Packard nobody wore suits. If someone came to work in a suit they were majorly made fun of. Our sales reps wore suits. Anyone dealing with the public wore suits. If you are trying to convince people you are responsible and to trust you, you wear a suit and a conservative hair cut. If you look like someone who stumbled out of Burning Man nobody is going to take you seriously. Sorry but that's how the real world works folks. Books are judged by their covers.

You have to rise above what you are protesting against and create a vision of respectability. This is what OWS lacks. It's what Martin Luther King got right. You have to keep your standards high or you fail.

Thanks! Even the biggest stoner in the world doesn't want someone wearing a robe playing the bongos and chanting to be in charge of their future or financial well being. They want a smart sophisticated person who dresses respectable. If you are going to get the general population to support your movement you better damn well be something that installs confidence and respect. I'm sorry but a Woodstock style camp in just isn't going to do it.

Why OWS has no legs is it looks sloppy and that just does not impress the masses. They need to raise their standards. You have to be serious to be taken seriously.

This shift to blocking ports seems ill-conceived to me... They aren't impacting Wall Street nor many of the financial and corporate entities they are targeting.

They are directly impacting truck drivers and long shore-men who are trying to make a living... that's just stupid. Focus on corporate headquarters and shareholder meetings... isn't that the point?

Not that I agree with their "strategy", but I think it was more to get the Unions behind them, knowing they wouldn't cross a picket line

If you have notoriety as an artist or a technical guru you can get away with it but in most cases you are going to put a suit and tie on. Believe me when you walk in nicely groomed in a nice suit and shined shoes people treat you with respect. More women want to fuck you. You get better service at restaurants. Just because you changed the cover of your book. It's much harder to do wearing jeans and a T-shirt.

I'll have to pass this new dress code on to the local protesters.

An Armani and a pair of Florsheims are the proper attire for when you're getting beaten and pepper-sprayed by fascist nazi cops.

Not always the case. I don't have notoriety, I'm not really a technical guru. I've been lucky enough to live in LA for 20 years (where thankfully people are a little more open-minded) and primarily work in the music and entertainment industries until recently, but I've never agreed to alter my appearance (and never will) for something I'm only going to commit 'x' hours a day to... no one gets to dictate how I look for the rest of the day, sorry.

Funny, I went on an interview with some Fortune 500 Headhunter douche a while before this gig who balked at my even wearing my hair in a pony-tail (if it's up and looks neat, how the F can you have a problem with it? It's not like I'm working with food here - and no one would dare try to tell a girl they had to wear their hair up/down at work), politely told him to f*ck off, and shortly thereafter landed my current Fortune 500 company gig...which is better than the one jackass was recruiting me for... where being a longhair is a plus...sometimes sticking to your guns and bucking the status quo is a good thing.
