The playing...standard EVH fare. Just dicking around to showcase the guitar and amp a bit. I certainly wouldn't judge anyone on something like this. I know he can still play, regardless of what some people believe.

The guitar...I guess he figured he could make some dough off of his design and paint job. Nothing wrong with that in my eyes. There were certainly a lot of guitars based off of that one pickup, whammy, and volume control thing. Don't think I'd ever buy one of these replicas, but more power to 'em.

The amp...Sounded decent for sure, but I don't know if I'd say Classic VH just yet. Hard to tell how it really sounds with the quality of these videos. Can't be any worse than what he WAS playing. Fender has certainly put a classic guitar amp or two on the market, so they know what they're doing.
Yeah, I agree. He looked & sounded fine, and the amp tone IS better than before.

Still dunno about $30k for the replica, though.... But then, I started building guitars because I was inspired by the fact that Ed proved you can build a guitar that does exactly what you want for not a ton of cash...

I'm with ya on both counts. There has never been 35 minutes in the history of Rock music or guitar that can touch that album. Pure fucking genius.

Why can't I find any info on the Frankie on Fender.com? Maybe I missed details from the NAMM video because of the poor audio quality? Has it not been produced yet? Why is there no mention of the Frankenstrat on the Fender site? Where did you hear the $20k price?

I thought Ed looked pretty good.

Certainly better than he has in the last 3-4 years. For a 51 year old who's an alcoholic, who has had cancer, who has had a divorce, who has played....gee...how many shows in the last thrity years??? ---too many to count -- he looked good.

The playing: standard EVH for sure and proof that the man still has it. To me, he was just noodling to showcase the guitar and that's about it.

I wasn't expecting anything new, since Ed has already done it all on the axe anyway (Re: the six pack).

But it was very cool to see him actually play and play well ---the sound was good --- closer to his signature '84 sound -- hard to say exactly because of the video quality and recording.

But, I have to say, things are looking good for 2007!

It was listed in the current Guitar World magazine, $25-30k, producing 300 of them.

I think he looks good "Considering" certainly, but if he cleaned up a little, he wouldn't look too bad at all.

The playing, however, was better than I ever imagined it'd be...

I find it extremely odd that the EVH frankenstrat is no where to be found on the Fender website. No hint of it. Even doing a search on Van Halen turns up nothing.
Seems like Fender would really want to aggressively promote and market such an expensive and limited product. Instead, we get an article in one guitar publication.

He sounds alright, and if he really takes the tour seriously, then expect him to sound better.

I think Dave is just going to tell Eddie to "Fuck Off!" I would. Eddie is unstable and if it's like the last tour with fat Sam, it's an embarrassment.

It all depends on how good the rock and roll hall of fame show goes if they even do it.

My gut is telling me Eddie and Wolfgang will play to the crickets this summer. Who gives a flying fuck?

I can see it now. The show is ready to start. The band and management are in a panic because they can't find Eddie. They finally find him sleeping in the gutter behind the venue. Whooops! That ain't Eddie it's some bum who was taking a nap! They kick the bum offstage but the guy still wins because theres free food and booze backstage.

The Frankenstrat reissue is not going to be marketed as a Fender product. It will be sold under the EVH GEAR franchise that Eddie owns. Fender makes the gear for Ed and Ed sells it under his own label.

Fender just wants everyone to know they made the thing. They want their custom shop to have the reputation of making accurate vintage reissues which oviousely are very profitable. Also when some big name has their guitars copied it generates a positive image for the whole Fender brand.

I think it's a pretty smart move. If Eddie becomes too much of a pain, they can just refuse to sell him stuff and cut him loose. He's the failure because it's his brandname. If it works, Fender gains and can help Ed expand his line.

It's obviouse Ed doesn't like to get up infront of people in that type of setting. If he was rehearsed and had a band it may have been different.

It's almost like they tricked him to get up there or Eddie was too wasted to remember he was suppossed to do a demo. LOL!
