Michael Anthony looking forward to hearing new Van Halen
In a new interview with ABC News Radio, former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony says he's "excited" that his former band are working on new material.
Van Halen are currently in the studio with producer John Shanks, recording their first album with David Lee Roth in more than 25 years, and their first new music as a band in 7 years.
"I'm looking forward to seeing what they'll do," says Anthony, adding that he has "no hard feelings" about his split from the band in 2005, when he was replaced by Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang.
Anthony hasn't spoken to any of the members of VH since the end of the band's 2004 “reunion” tour with Sammy Hagar, built to promote the ill-conceived 2-disc, greatest hits set, “Best Of Both Worlds.”
Eddie did not want Michael to be a part of the ’04 trek, forcing him to take a pay cut and signing over his rights to any future use of the VH name. After failed attempts at working with Roth, the band needed Hagar for the tour, who refused to sign on unless Anthony was a part of it.
"The tour did not end as harmoniously as we would have liked it to and it probably should have gone on longer than it did," said Anthony.
Despite being publicly slammed by Eddie for the better part of 30 years, Michael remains the diplomat, even going so far as to say that he wouldn't be against having his band Chickenfoot open for VH, should they go on tour.
"I got no problem with that," said the bassist.
Something tells me Hagar might feel differently on that one.
Chickenfoot are also in the studio right now, working on their sophomore album.
Despite my nickname causing confusion, I'm not female ... :D
You really have to wonder sometimes about the motivations of some of these people that write stories for websites. Case in point:
Despite being publicly slammed by Eddie for the better part of 30 years, Michael remains the diplomat, even going so far as to say that he wouldn't be against having his band Chickenfoot open for VH, should they go on tour.
Aside from a stray comment or two, does anyone here seriously agree that Edward Van Halen has made it his life's work to go about "slamming" Mike Anthony?
I've never heard any explanation for the antipathy.
I've just come to the conclusion that the Van Halen's are pricks.
Outside of the rumor of Billy Sheehan being asked to join around Fair Warning, along with the confirmed rehearsals at Roth's house with Jeff Berlin, that's about it. Ed once said he couldn't even hear Anthony on stage, and I guess if you add up all three you can draw the conclusion that Anthony wasn't exactly what the brothers had in mind as a bassist, things finally coming to a head with the crummy 2004 tour. Having said that, why did they wait until 2007 to give him the sack?
Anthony's "que sera sera" public attitude about not being in Van Halen is baffling to me.
I guess the guy has enough money and enough satisfaction with where he's at now that being dumped for Ed's kid just doesn't bother him. In addition, maybe he was just plain sick and tired of dealing with the Van Halens (who DO seem to be a pair of grade-A dickheads). I mean, it wasn't exactly like Roth has anything that could be construed as a personal relationship with Anthony...or ever did, really. So perhaps it's not surprising that Anthony has decided to enjoy being in the band he's in now. I can't imagine if Anthony were in Van Halen these days it would be a comfortable situation for him, what with the Van Halens clearly not wanting him there and Dave not really caring much one way or the other.
Still, after the amount of loyalty he displayed, the Van Halens took a shit on him. For him to now say "oh, yeah, it'd be neat if Chickenfoot were to open for Van Halen"...about the only upside for me as a fan would be the chance to see Anthony possibly join the band onstage for a number or two, but the downside would be Hagar undoubtedly wanting to jump up onstage with him.
Anthony either has a Zen-like acceptance of what happened, or he has no balls...OR he is hedging his bets that Van Halen will ask him to rejoin down the line. I'd like to see it happen. The whole "bring your kid to work" tour novelty wore off fairly quickly. Wolfgang really didn't have much of anything to offer that ANY amateur bassplayer couldn't have provided.
OR, he is just happy to be where he is....and think of it this way, he WAS 1/4 of the classic lineup of VH, and no matter how much crap rolls down out of Howdy Doody Mountain in his direction, that will never change. He was 1/4 of the greatest American hard rock band there ever was.
Michael Anthony is now actually part of a band where he is an equal and treated as such. He is having a great time, keeping as busy as he wants to be, and is not taking orders. I'm sure he would like to do a Van Halen reunion for the nostalgia, the money, the music.....but if it doesn't happen he's probably happier the way he is now and not really gonna make a push for it. He's living the good life now & feels respected by his bandmates. Probably wasn't like that in Van Halen since the late 80's....and never to this extent.
When you're financially set, it's probably really easy to take a pay cut and enjoy your life and not have to deal with assholes.
