From what I have gathered from the things I've read and heard, it's supposedly a mix between the VH II song writing style and the Fair Warning sound, if that makes sense. I'm just hoping for an ass kicking CD full of great guitar work and awesome music. With the amount of time they spent recording, I would assume it's probably going to be pretty polished up and "error free". I just hope it's not a chopped together "ProTools" type production where everything is cut and pasted in over and over. It's just amazing to think that we'll have a new Van Halen single with Dave at the helm in about a week!

Direct quote from the Wikipedia page on DLR:

"Roth is often credited with promoting Van Halen's image as the quintessential rock band, one devoted to a lifestyle described by David Fricke in Rolling Stone as "a nonstop booze-and-babes party train."

I hope they went through all the old demos and pieced together "OLD" new songs

My bet is on "Big Train".

If this is the case, then the album should include some covers of DLR solo material (certainly not from the Steve Vai era). It'd be a real reunion.

Well.... if you really think about it, it just fucking might be. Not sure what the "2" would mean. "7" is obvious, as this is the 7th Van Halen album. However, if you wanted to count all the records that were released under the Van Halen name, you have 6 Van Halen + 4 Van Hagar + VDIII = 11, which would make this "12".

Or does this only make sense after a shit load of Snow Cap Ale?

I somewhat chuckled reading some of the comments here... odd expectations by some.

It won't sound thin like some of the original early CD releases... frankly sound quality of the early analog to digital conversions sucked elephant ass and lost a ton of tonality and depth. I do expect 2011 top technology in sound recording and reproduction.

I don't expect to hear any of the original demos unearthed... there's a reason most of those were passed over multiple times. Interesting artifacts... but old shit that didn't make the grade.

What I expect... deep earthy tones from Ed's improved amps and guitars. It'll have Ed's touch and attack. But go back listen to the demos of the 5150 III amp and the 3 distinct channels... there's magic built in to the tones. Hopefully their studio captured that well. Al's Drums will be in your face and up your ass... Other than Peart there's still none better on the skins.

Song structure... what you won't hear is Hagar's blue collar simpleton, cheesy melodies... nor Cherone's eclectic, failed artisticy bullshit. What I expect to hear is Diamond Dave's unique blend of melodic interplay vocally with Ed's near-genius approach to rhythm guitar, peppered with his fretboard fireworks of fills and riffs from hell... Lyrically it will have tongue-in-cheek Daveism's through out. Probably it will be devoid of high-school puberty references but still a dirty play on debauchery of some sort... just a bit older slant... Bottom line... Dave's melodic sensibilities will drive Ed's composing in only a way that pairing will work. It will be the "old" magic...

The real question mark comes from the other half of the VH rhythm section... on the 07/08 tour Wolfie's bass playing didn't add any new or distinctly interesting dimension to the classics. Most of it was unremarkable and in some cases hardly stood out in the mix, if it could be found... Clearly he doesn't have the pounding attack and driving beats Micheal brought to the performances. We've seen clips of the kid tearing up on drums and guitar... there's clearly something in his soul and ability to rock. So... in the studio recordings he won't be hidden behind Al's drums in the mix... does he have any of the magic his old man was born with..? We'll see... Hoping a new creative dimension comes from this... won't sound like Classic VH no matter how it's mixed. Wolf ain't Mike... but he's an unknown element. Hope and youth springs eternal.

I see your thinking here Ford. The 7 & 12 make sense. Although from everything we know over the last 7+ years, EVH is doing his very best to forget all things Hagar & Cherone. I don't think he would leave any reference to either of them...even if cryptic. Hell, he tried to erase MA off the old album covers. That was just shameful. Funny, but shameful.
