EVH is the reason I started playing and building my own guitars.
I am where I am due to his influence (and have told him so to his face). I've had the honor of picking his brain about guitars, gear, and playing in general on numerous occasions. And he was always cool to me.
I've never said a bad word about him here or anywhere else, except that I thought Van Hagar was a travesty.
But to deny Malmsteen's (albeit initial) impact on the guitar community is seriously retarded.

It's safe to say no one would be doing hammer-ons in rock guitar were it not for Edward, and no one would be sweep-picking arpeggios were it not for Yngwie.

It's true, though, and that's the sad element. Not ONCE have I said Ed wasn't innovative or extremely influencial...although I've been very critical of his contributions to the instrument since he lost his writing partner in 1985.

Who would doubt that? Not Guitar Magazine, which never gave Eddie a "Guitarist of the Year" award after 1985 (and I do believe he won it every year from 1978 until then, correct?).

There's just no denying that Yngwie absolutely gave the world something new to aspire to in 1983-1986 (or so), and that effect is STILL resonating with a lot of the newer acts which are really taking off (such as the ones that Matt White listed).

Yet, eddie78 just can't seem to let go of his "dresses like gay!" arguments (regardless of the fact that Yngwie's stage clothes simply follow a trend set by Hendrix and Blackmore years before).
