MacAlpine was/is a monster, for sure. First two solo albums (Edge of Insanity and Maximum Security) were great.

Graham Bonnet is the greatest singer in the history of rock and roll imo. Even better than DLR, Plant, Coverdale etc. No one else sings with the power and intensity of Bonnet. Goran Edman was pretty damn good too.

Listening to Tears of Sahara right now - Tony MacAlpine and George Lynch are quite a powerful combination!

These speed = no emotion people need to get educated about music. Speed is merely a mechanism for expressing different emotions that cannot be expressed with slow playing. If you don't believe me listen to the sixth movement in Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Fast as hell and it doesn't get much more emotional that that. It is generally considered to be the greatest piece of classical music ever written.

Done and done...although I'd seriously rethink myself before using the term "clown" to describe him, considering he virtually single-handedly revolutionized the way Eddieclones looked at the guitar in 1984.

          You think so?

I have to disagree...I know Bonnet's got his fans, but honestly I can't stand him...

Actually I still have that issue of Guitar Magazine laying around somewhere with that quote from Malmsteen about Ed - seemed like he genuinely wanted to get with him and play...

Would have been very interesting to hear, no doubt of that...I doubt Yngwie'd give him the time of day currently though...

So basically Vai made a "Name" for himself out of ripping off and living in Frank Zappa's, Eddie Van Halen's and Yngwie's shadows.
Stepping in to fill great players shoes like Ed and Yngwie just proves how great Steve is. Ed couldn’t play Yngwie’s stuff and Yngwie could never play Ed’s stuff. They both have totally different styles and tones. But Steve did a really good job at mimicking both of their styles. To say he ripped of his playing style and that he got 90 percent of his ideas from Zappa is just really dumb.

                  Not true, actually...

Check out the "Little Guitars: A Tribute to Van Halen" album...

Yngwie plays on Light Up the Sky (Doug Pinnick from King's X on vocals) and totally owns the song...plays it every bit as well as Eddie...

Frankly, I'm hard pressed to decide who's playing on the song I like better...

Yeah, I dig Yngwie's playing on that...

He plays the heck out of the rhythm on that song and just burns a killer solo...

I'm glad someone else here likes it...

Those musicians are exceptional technicians, but their stuff sound "soul-less" IMO. Maybe Malmsteen is more of a melodist than the other two. But frankly, listening to all three of them is a terrible bore to me. The pals of mine who are into guitar will always say I'm crazy to say that, but I can do nothing about it. The worst for me is the "circus" they tour with, the "G3" or whatever... Goddamn boredom... When I don't just find it pointless.
Even when there's an attempt at making melody... When they cover Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" like I saw and heard them do on video, it gives me nausea. No taste, no tact, just playing as technically and fast as they can, with no soul... No thanks.
Maybe Malmsteen, whose albums I know much less, is an actual songwriter, I don't know, but mainly I can't get into their works, which is highly respectable of course, by the by, pushing guitar to such levels...
EVH is a composer, which the other three are, strictly speaking... But I would never change "Mean Street" for their whole catalogues. Maybe I exagerate here, but I think there's more "soul" in any CVH song than will ever be in all of Malmsteen, Satriani and Vai's albums.

Unless there's Dave to strive the job, I'm sure Vai would never have played what he did on EEAS.

All that tagadagadagada-look-how-fast-I'm-playing stuff pisses me off. I know a few local guitarists whose aim is to play as closely to Malmsteen or Satriani as possible, and I think they're just dumb (the locals).

IMHO, it's EVH, hands down. I couldn't care less about "Speedy Gonzaleses". Soul and melody, dammit!!
Listen to "For the Love of God" by steve vai. I'm sure you'll change your mind some what after hearing that song in terms of feel.
