Damn Good is perhaps the worst Dave solo song ever imo.

However Vai did write Skyscraper which is a kick ass song.

Nah, I think it's safe to say Just Like Paradise and Perfect Timing are far worse than Damn Good...

And if you want worse than than that, check out the next album...

When I learned how to play guitar a long time ago my teacher was a successful jazz guitarist. He really liked Yngwie's playing but not EVH's. He described EVH's playing as "sound effects" and to a large degree I think he was correct. But he also said that EVH was one of the best songwriters in rock and roll.

With people like EVH, Yngwie, Jimi Hendrix, Al Di Meola, Allan Holdsworth, Pat Metheny, etc. around it is kind of amazing to me that people like Vai and Satriani have any fans at all.
Steve Vai and Satriani are good guitar players. But Vai just copies too many people and not as good. He played with Frank Zappa(got I would think 90% of his musical ideas from him, Joined ALcatrazz which was Yngwies band then of course Dave which Yngwie was Dave's first choice as recommended to him by Billy Sheenan).

So basically Vai made a "Name" for himself out of ripping off and living in Frank Zappa's, Eddie Van Halen's and Yngwie's shadows.

Just Like Paradise and Perfect Timing are great songs.

As for the next album Drop in the Bucket is arguably Dave's greatest song ever - with VH or solo. A Little Ain't Enough and 40 Below are great too.

I'm a rather poor guitar player myself, so don't mistake what I'm going to say about Satriani, Vai and Malmsteen...

Those musicians are exceptional technicians, but their stuff sound "soul-less" IMO. Maybe Malmsteen is more of a melodist than the other two. But frankly, listening to all three of them is a terrible bore to me. The pals of mine who are into guitar will always say I'm crazy to say that, but I can do nothing about it. The worst for me is the "circus" they tour with, the "G3" or whatever... Goddamn boredom... When I don't just find it pointless.
Even when there's an attempt at making melody... When they cover Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" like I saw and heard them do on video, it gives me nausea. No taste, no tact, just playing as technically and fast as they can, with no soul... No thanks.
Maybe Malmsteen, whose albums I know much less, is an actual songwriter, I don't know, but mainly I can't get into their works, which is highly respectable of course, by the by, pushing guitar to such levels...
EVH is a composer, which the other three are, strictly speaking... But I would never change "Mean Street" for their whole catalogues. Maybe I exagerate here, but I think there's more "soul" in any CVH song than will ever be in all of Malmsteen, Satriani and Vai's albums.

Unless there's Dave to strive the job, I'm sure Vai would never have played what he did on EEAS.

All that tagadagadagada-look-how-fast-I'm-playing stuff pisses me off. I know a few local guitarists whose aim is to play as closely to Malmsteen or Satriani as possible, and I think they're just dumb (the locals).

IMHO, it's EVH, hands down. I couldn't care less about "Speedy Gonzaleses". Soul and melody, dammit!!

Ed has true talent and is an actual celeb. Yngwie would have been just another guitar store hanging out nerd if it wasn't for the shred metal that was popular in the 80's. Eddie hated anything that was played fast just for the sake of playing fast. Yngwie's music while technically impressive does nothing to stir the emotions. I am a guitar playing hack and I can play the intro to Unchained and that sounds ten times cooler than anything anything Yngwie ever played.

What songs did this Yngwie clown write? I still have no idea who he is.

Please name some songs he played. I haven't a clue.

I'm done defending Yngwie from ignorant fools. I'll let someone else take this one.

Anyone who says speed = lack of emotion / feeling should take the issue up with Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach.

I at least bothered to develop my point.

I made it obvious that I don't think I'm right over anybody who digs Malmsteen. Sorry if a three-line read is beyond your courage.
